RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION OF THE CERVICAL SPINES

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) of the cervical spine is a minimally invasive procedure offered at The Comprehensive Pain Institute designed to offer long-term relief from chronic neck pain. RFA focuses on targeting nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals between cervical vertebrae (neck) and the brain, effectively decreasing or even eliminating pain by disrupting such signals.

Radiofrequency Ablation for Cervical Spine Conditions

RFA of the cervical spine can be particularly useful in relieving chronic neck pain caused by:

  • Facet Joint Arthritis: Inflammation and degeneration of facet joints that causes persistent neck pain.
  • Cervical Spondylosis: Age-related wear and tear on spinal discs in the neck that leads to pain and stiffness, leading to persistent neck discomfort.
  • Whiplash Injuries: Trauma caused by sudden neck movements from car accidents can result in chronic neck pain.
  • Failed Neck Surgery: Pain that continues despite other treatments being tried does not improve.

How It Works

  • The procedure uses radiofrequency energy to target and heat specific nerves responsible for sending pain signals directly to the brain, using radiofrequency heating technology. Here is how it works:
  • Pre-Procedure Prep: After positioning comfortably and cleansing their neck area, anesthetic is administered locally in order to numb it before beginning treatment – this ensures minimal discomfort during the procedure.
  • Guidance: With fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, physicians carefully insert specialized needles near targeted nerves.
  • Identification of Nerve: To accurately pinpoint the source of pain, an electrical current is applied through a needle to confirm which nerve is being affected by its pain.
  • Ablation: Once the nerve has been identified, radiofrequency energy is administered through a needle to heat and disable it, interrupting its ability to transmit pain signals and relieving patients from pain.
  • Once complete, the needle will be taken out and covered by a small bandage at its insertion site. Usually this entire procedure takes 30 to 90 minutes.

Benefits for Long-Lasting Pain Relief

Many patients report experiencing significant relief for six to two years; repeat treatments may provide ongoing comfort.

  • Minimally Invasive: RFA is a minimally invasive procedure, significantly lowering risks and speeding recovery time.
  • Reduced Need for Medication: By targeting the root cause of chronic pain, RFA can decrease dependence on pain medications – including opioids – significantly.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Following their surgery, many patients report increased mobility and an enhanced quality of life.
