Are you or someone you love living with cancer? We know how difficult it can be to navigate the ups and downs of that diagnosis on its own, let alone the side effects it brings with it. At CPI Benbrook pain and wellness clinics (locations also in Bedford, TX) we can help ease the pain that comes with cancer and cancer treatments. Read on to learn more about how!
Causes of Cancer Pain
While each patient’s experience with cancer will be unique, there are a handful of common causes when it comes to pain on the cancer journey. When cancer grows and harms tissue nearby, it can cause pain in those areas. It releases chemicals that irritate the area around the tumor. As tumors grow, they may put stress on bones, nerves, and organs around them. Other times the treatment(s) will have side effects that cause discomfort. This can include pain related to surgery and/or recovery. CPI’s Benbrook pain and wellness specialists (locations also in Bedford,TX) advise patients that there can be multiple causes of pain that occur at the same time.
Medication
When treating pain with medication, it’s important for the patient to go through a thorough analysis of symptoms with his/her doctor. Medication is prescribed based upon a variety of factors, including the severity of pain, the cancer stage, health history, additional treatments and/or therapies the patient is currently receiving and more. Some of the most common medications are as follows:
- NSAID’s
- Aspirin
- Acetaminophen
- Opioids
- Steroids
- Antidepressants
- Antiepileptics
Some pain specialists may recommend medications, such as antidepressants or antiepileptics to help with cancer pain. This does not mean that the patient has depression or epilepsy, it simply means that studies have shown these medications may have a positive impact on pain and other cancer or treatment symptoms.
Treatments
In addition to medication, it may be helpful to try some of the comprehensive pain treatment strategies offered at chronic pain clinics. These include a variety of options on a wide spectrum from non-invasive to surgical. The three most common treatments are as follows:
- Nerve blocks
- Medication pumps
- Surgery
CPI currently has Benbrook doctors accepting new patients (locations also at Bedford, TX) who will be able to offer additional information about all these treatments and more. We are dedicated to doing all we can to make your journey with cancer easier and less painful.
Therapies
Finally, we would be remiss to not include alternative pain treatment options as well. These methods are encouraged as additional treatments to incorporate along with those in the above categories. It’s important to consider treatment options that also offer benefits to the patient’s mental and emotional wellbeing, which the following may do:
- Massage
- Biofeedback
- Meditation
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
- Hot/cold therapy
- Hypnosis
